Can you have a go at the questions about estimating capacities below?
Yesterday in maths, we estimated capacities of different containers in litres and millilitres. Throughout the activity, we got much better at being able to come up with sensible estimations! Can you have a go at the questions about estimating capacities below?

Last week, you saw and contributed to our post about spooky vocabulary, and phrases we magpied from a few horror story extracts we looked at. Thank-you for all of your comments.
Well, we turned those into horror story openings - and I'm really pleased with how we got on! Have a look at Uways' work. I think we might have the next Goosebumps author in out midst. Just don't read it last thing at night... ! What's your favourite part of the story? Do you have any useful feedback for Uways? Our Reading Detective for class 6RS is PC Superspy - working out why the author has chosen a certain word.
Can you look through your books and find any exciting words that the author has chosen for a reason? Make a note of them in the comments below! Don't forget to explain why you think the author picked that word... Do you remember how much fun we had last Wednesday taking part in football maths?
What was your favourite part, and why? I really enjoyed making my fantasy football team, and calculating how many millions of pounds it would cost! But playing the games in the hall was great fun, too. Let's all say a huge thank-you to Mr Plowman for organising this event! To help us with our writing, we have been 'stealing' words from a spooky setting description. I'm looking forward to seeing your phrases in tomorrow's big writing task.
Can you list some of your favourite magpied phrases below? In maths, we have been sorting triangles!
You were allowed to organise them in any way that you thought would be best. It was great to see lots of mathematical thinking and collaboration. Well done, Year 6! Can anyone name the types of triangles in the comments, and define their properties? Today, you all received your new Assertive Mentoring targets!
Why not use your iPads to do a little bit of practise to reach them? Here are some useful websites... Reading http://worldbookday.com/wbdtv/ - trailers for new and upcoming books, and storytime videos! http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading-owl/reading - loads of free books for your iPad! Writing http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/english/spelling_grammar/ - grammar practice! http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/english/writing/ - useful writing tips. Maths http://www.mathletics.co.uk/ - we all know this one really well :) https://www.khanacademy.org/ - this explains how to work out lots of calculations with videos and practice questions! Today, we watched a short clip of a movie to inspire us with some excellent vocabulary. We're going to be writing stories based on the clip.
Can you remember any exciting words and phrases that you heard in today's lesson? Or maybe you could add some more in the comments below? There may be house points involved for excellent contributors... Have you read any good books lately? Why not share your favourite stories with the rest of the class!
As part of your maths learning over the holidays, you have been given an assignment on Mathletics!
Please complete it before you come back to school on Tuesday November 3rd. We'll look over some of the more challenging questions in class! Remember that your usernames and passwords are all saved on your iPads. If you have any problems logging on, please send me an email and we'll get you sorted out. Have fun and see you all soon! - Mr Sharrock We were given the challenge of recreating the London Eye using our modelling skills. We had to think about designing, building, joining, strengthening and problem solving. Today it was Life Skills Day! We took part in two workshops - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The year 6 workshops were based around Careers. Skills needed to do these jobs and careers were discussed and added to our paper people! We also thought about which subjects we might need to study at high school, college and university to start these careers. We all noticed that Maths, Literacy and Computing / ICT were extremely important for every career. We enjoyed the Comenius Market today! Throughout the week, we advertised and created our Comenius products. Today we set up our stall and sold our products! Well done Year 6! You did a great job! Mr Sharrock :) Do Computers speak in English, Spanish or German? No In order for us to understand how programming works we need to understand how computers speak. Computers use a system of on/off to generate codes, these codes are what we interpret as 1s and 0s. These codes then convert to something we can read and understand such as letters and words. Computers use a Base-2 Number System called the Binary Number System. Binary numbers are 0 and 1. We use the Base-10 Number system consisting of digits 0-9, the Denary (or Decimal) Number system! Think about all we have studied over the past few weeks and what we have learnt from reading 'The Street Child'. Do some research - the Queen at the time was Victoria - what did she do to help poor children living in poverty? How did she address child labour? Do you think she would have been so successful if she did not do anything to help? |
