In preparation for our trip too...

Miss Elliott and Miss Jolly would like you to prepare 3 questions each to ask at the zoo based on our theme and write your questions and answers here after the trip.

What would you like to find out about the animals? Remember to think about their habitats, feeding, animal groups and much more!

Which animals are the most highly rated species?
Are there any more famous scientists who have made a theory on animals, like Charles Darwin he made a theory of evolution which we do not if it is true or not?

I have also got another question.
How do the animals learn what humans tell them an order like if you say a farmer was whistling to a dog and the dog came running to his farmer?

Thank you miss Elliott for taking us to Chester zoo i had a great time seeing the jaguars, tigers, lions and my best bit was when we went into the cave of the bats. It was scary but still had a great time.

did you have a good time in Chester zoo?

I have found the differences between a borean orangutan and a normal orangutan:

This subspecies is critically endangered with latest estimates suggesting there are less than 8,000 individuals left in the wild making them much rarer than their relatives on the island of Borneo.

Their distinctive orange fur is somewhat longer and paler and their faces are more elongated, with adult males sporting orange moustaches and fine pale hair covering their cheeks. Both males and females sport “beards”.

Bornean Orangutan

Three subspecies of Bornean orangutan have been recognised but all are confided to the small island of Borneo in Indonesia. Some scientists argue that the Central Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii) is perhaps more closely related to the Sumatran orangutan and work is in progress to determine whether this is true or not.

When looking at this subspecies it is possible to see the differences. They sport darker, coarser hair than their Sumatran relatives and the males in particular stand out. They possess very large cheek pads which are covered in short hair resembling a human beard.

Bornean orangutans number around 50,000-60,000 and although their numbers have declined rapidly in recent years the IUCN classifies them as endangered rather than critically endangered.

Regardless of their differences both subspecies of Orangutan are threatened with extinction and unless swift action is taken to halt the devastation to the indonesian rain-forest we face losing them in the very near future.
