Tonight was amazing! We were invited to the school for a special meal with teachers, parents, children and the Mayor. The headteacher kicked off proceedings by singing a song for us X Factor style! Next the children sang and danced for us. To begin the meal, we were each given a piece of wafer. Then we had to go round the room, offering people our wafer as we took a piece of theirs. At the same time, we were wishing each other 'Merry Christmas!' The parents served us with food that is traditionally eaten on Christmas Eve. We had pierogi, which is like ravioli; stuffed pasta. Ours was stuffed with cabbage and mushrooms. We also had beetroot soup and fish, followed by cake. After dinner, St. Nicholas appeared and presented us all with our very own Christmas bauble. Then the priest gave each of us some wafer bread to take home, and a candle. Our host, Eva, presented us all with gifts from he parents; hand-made gingerbread men and women. To finish, we all got up to sing our Comenius song 'Knowing me, knowing you' to the tune of 'Silent Night'. Then each country sang 'Silent Night' in their own language. There was a live band playing traditional Polish music, and before we knew it we were up clapping and dancing along! We felt overwhelmed by the hospitality and generosity of the school, 'Zespol Szkol Miejskich'.
