Our class book is Stig of the Dump! It is written by Clive King. Are you enjoying the book so far? What do you predict will happen next? Can you research the author; has he written any other books?
Our new theme for this term is called 'Rock and Roll Through History!'. During this theme we will be learning about: the Stone Age, Iron Age, Rock and Roll music and our class book will be Stig of the Dump! What do you already know about our theme? What would you like to find out about?
Year 5 took a trip to Haslam Park Primary school on Monday 23rd January to meet an author called Rob Lloyd Jones. Rob has a background in Egyptology and Archaeology and went on many expeditions abroad, he has said that the only thing he really found on these trips was good stories which is why he then became a writer. He talked about his new book Jake Atlas and the Tomb of the Emerald Snake – which is set in in Egypt. Year 5 had a great afternoon!
This week year 5 and 6 have started their new Pikes Lane Learning Jouney Passports!
As you can see, they are full of exciting skills and experiences which the children are going to try to complete before they leave us at the end of year 6!
Remember that we need to see some evidence that you have completed them so take photographs and videos on your iPads!
We look forward to seeing what you have been doing!
This term, our theme is Our World and Beyond! What do you already know about this theme? Do you have a fascinating fact about Our World and Beyond? What would you like to learn this theme?Share your ideas on the blog!
On 16th December Pikes Lane had a life skills day! 5OM took part in a Healthy Eating lesson, a disability awareness class, team building and a developing communication session!
As Year 5 have been learning about Italy we made some yummy pizzas! We used fresh foods and low fat ingedients to make our pizza healthy.
On Tuesday 6th December 5OM became news reporters! The class worked collaboratively to create a TV report about a volcanic eruption in Pompeii! Here is one of the reports!
This term Year 5 are learning about the Romans, Volcanoes and Italy, lots of the children in 5OM have been busy creating projects at home all to do with our theme!
Here are some of the amazing projects - we even had an exploding volcano!
On Monday 17th October, 5OM took their learning outside!
Mr Higgins kindly planned outdoor activities for Year 5 which involved the Romans and being effective communicators! 5OM had to work together to complete the activities, they had to use prior knowledge of the Romans, they had to be risk takers and work in a team! Throughout the morning the children developed their speaking and listening skills! By the end of the session the children really understood the importance of being effective communicators.
Here are some pictures from the morning!
A big thank you to Mr Higgins for organising!
Year 5 are learning about Forces this term in Science!
Last week Year 5 were told about a rare and important meteorite that had landed in a remote part of Europe. The Natural History Museum recovery team are in the process of retrieving it, but they needed a remote back up team with forces expertise. Year 5 decided that they are up for the challenge! The recovery team explained that they need to parachute in to begin the process of repatriation - but which parachute is best? Year 5 created their own parachutes and tested them to help with the process!
What do you think will make a good parachute and why?
